☀️ 5 Simple Ways to Squeeze the Most Out of the June Sunshine

The days are at their absolute longest, the school gates have reopened after a gorgeous May half-term, and the British summer is finally doing what it does best—giving us those beautiful, golden evenings.

When the sun is shining, there’s a collective urge to drop everything and get outside. But between school runs, work, and the never-ending laundry pile, it can feel tough to make the most of it.

The good news? You don’t need a packed suitcase or a grand plan to catch those summer vibes. Here are five easy, stress-free ways to squeeze every last drop of joy out of the June sunshine with your family.

1. The "After-School Dinner" Switch-Up

Why wait for the weekend? When the afternoon sun is still beaming at 5 PM, declare a kitchen strike. Pack up whatever you were planning to have for dinner -whether it's homemade wraps, last night's leftovers, or even a cheeky chip-shop run - and head straight to your local park or even just the back garden. Eating sitting on a blanket makes ordinary weeknight dinners feel like an absolute adventure for the kids.

2. Take the Indoors, Outdoors

If the kids need some quiet downtime after a busy day at school, transfer their favourite indoor activities outside. Lay a big duvet or blanket on the grass and move the Lego box, the book pile, or the board games into the shade of a tree. They get the fresh air and vitamin D, and you get a moment to sit back with a cold drink. Win-win!

3. Savor the "Golden Hour" Walk

With the sun setting so late, there’s a magical window of time just before the bedtime routine kicks in. A quick 15-minute "pyjama walk" around the block or down a local trail can be a beautiful way to wind down. The light is stunning, the birds are singing, and it’s a lovely, calm space for the kids to chat about their day before putting their heads on the pillow.

4. Create an Outdoor "Water Station"

You don't need a giant paddling pool to keep kids entertained (and cool!). On hot June afternoons, fill up a few plastic washing-up bowls, storage tubs, or buckets with water. Throw in some cups, sponges, paintbrushes, and plastic toys. It’s amazing how a simple setup can spark hours of sensory, splashy fun while you supervise from a comfy garden chair.

5. Celebrate National Picnic Week (June 15th - 21st)

We are blessed with some of the most stunning green spaces right on our doorstep across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Mark your calendars for National Picnic Week! Pop a permanent picnic blanket and a pack of wet wipes in the boot of your car. Whether you have an hour to spare at Wollaton Hall, Elvaston Castle, or just your local recreation ground, you'll always be ready to pull over and soak up the rays.

How is your family enjoying the brighter weather this month?
