Warm weather is a great excuse to get outdoors and enjoy family adventures, but it's important to take a few simple precautions to keep children safe and comfortable in the sunshine.
🧴 Protect Their Skin
Children's skin is much more sensitive than adults' and can burn quickly in the sun.
Apply sunscream before heading outdoors.
Reapply every two hours, and after swimming or sweating.
Don't forget easy-to-miss areas such as ears, noses, necks, shoulders and feet.
Remember that children can still get sunburnt on cloudy days.
🌳 Seek Shade
The sun is at its strongest between 11am and 3pm.
Take regular breaks in shaded areas.
Use parasols, gazebos or pop-up shelters when out and about.
Consider planning outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.
👒 Dress for the Weather
What children wear can make a big difference.
Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
Opt for outfits that cover shoulders where possible.
A wide-brimmed hat helps protect the face, ears and neck.
UV-protective sunglasses can help shield young eyes from harmful rays.

💧 Keep Them Hydrated
Children can become dehydrated quickly, especially when they're busy playing.
Encourage regular drinks throughout the day, even if they don't ask.
Always take water bottles on days out.
Offer water-rich snacks such as watermelon, strawberries and cucumber.
Watch for signs of dehydration, including tiredness, headaches or dizziness.
🌡️ Know the Signs of Overheating
It's important to recognise when a child may be getting too hot.
Look out for:
Flushed skin
Excessive sweating
Tiredness or irritability
Headaches
Dizziness
If a child appears overheated, move them into the shade, offer cool drinks and help them cool down as quickly as possible.
