Pack The Perfect Family Picnic

By Steph, Co-Owner and Director, First Time Mum

There’s something magical about a family picnic—fresh air, happy children, and food that somehow tastes better outdoors. Whether you’re heading to the park, beach, or even your own garden, a little planning can turn a simple outing into a stress-free highlight of your week.

🧺 Start with the Essentials

Before you even think about food, make sure you’ve got the basics covered. A large picnic blanket is a must (bonus points if it’s waterproof underneath), along with wipes, hand sanitiser, and plenty of napkins - because sticky fingers are guaranteed! If you’re out for a few hours, a cool bag with ice packs will keep everything fresh and safe to eat.

Don’t forget practical extras like suncream, hats, and a change of clothes for little ones. British weather can be unpredictable, so popping in a light jacket or umbrella is always a good idea.

🥪 Keep Food Simple (and Child-Friendly)

When it comes to picnic food, simple is best. Think easy-to-eat, minimal mess, and no need for reheating. Sandwiches are a classic for a reason - try a mix of fillings to suit everyone, and cut them into fun shapes for younger children.

Add a variety of snacks like chopped fruit, veggie sticks, mini sausage rolls, cheese cubes, or crackers. Finger foods work brilliantly for little hands and avoid the need for plates and cutlery.

For something a bit more exciting, consider pasta salad, wraps, or homemade muffins. And of course, a small treat - whether it’s biscuits, flapjacks, or a few squares of chocolate - always goes down well!

🧃 Drinks Done Right

Reusable bottles are your best friend for picnics. Fill them with water or diluted juice to keep everyone hydrated. For warmer days, freezing a bottle the night before doubles as an ice pack and a refreshing drink later on.

🧊 Pack Smart & Stay Organised

A little organisation goes a long way when you’re picnicking with children. Pack food in stackable containers or zip bags so everything is easy to grab without unpacking the entire basket. Keeping sweet treats separate from savoury items helps avoid soggy surprises, and pre-portioning snacks can make things feel fair (and avoid sibling debates!). It’s also worth bringing a small bag for rubbish so you can leave your picnic spot just as you found it—quick, tidy, and stress-free.

🎯 Don’t Forget the Fun

A picnic isn’t just about the food - it’s about making memories together. Pack a ball, bubbles, or a frisbee for some easy entertainment. You could even bring a simple scavenger hunt or a pack of cards for older children.

Letting kids help plan the games (and even pack the bag) builds excitement and gives them a sense of ownership over the day.

💡 Top Tip: Keep It Flexible

The “perfect” picnic doesn’t have to look Pinterest-worthy. Sometimes the best moments come from the unplanned ones - muddy shoes, slightly squashed sandwiches, and lots of laughter. Keep things relaxed, go with the flow, and focus on enjoying time together as a family.

After all, it’s not just about what’s in the basket—it’s about the memories you make around it.
